Security for Activists

Below is a list of resources exploring activist physical security outlooks and approaches.

The Holistic Security Manual

Holistic Security is a strategy manual to help human rights defenders maintain their well-being in action. The holistic approach integrates self-care, well-being, digital security, and information security into traditional security management practices.

Integrated Security Manual and Workshops

Defending human rights is vital work performed all over the world. It is difficult and often dangerous. These aspects of the work are hard to talk about. The integrated security workshop came about as a result of the work that has been done both internationally and by different organisations to highlight the security situation for human rights defenders, focusing on women.

Risk Analysis & Protection Planning

In response to concerns expressed by Human Rights Defenders about the challenges of addressing risks and threats, Front Line Defenders has developed a programme of training on security and protection. This programme, which includes workshops, courses, seminars, consultations and capacity-building resources, aims to facilitate knowledge, expertise and sharing of skills, to provide Human Rights Defenders with additional information and tools that may assist in addressing personal and organisational security and protection issues.

Protection International: Human Rights Defenders Training & Learning Publications

Protection International started in 1998 to work with grass-roots Human Rights Defenders at risk. Over the last 20 years, PI has made a major contribution to the definition and implementation of tools and strategies for the protection of Human Rights Defenders.

A guide to anonymous protesting

The right to peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracies the world over. But with governments growing ever more trigger-happy when it comes to quashing protest, it’s more important than ever to know how to organise and participate in protests safely. With technology playing an ever-greater role in organising and holding protests—and in surveilling them—learning how to keep yourself anonymous at every stage of the protest process may be an unfortunate necessity.
