Train as a MALS Legal Observer and help protect the #RightToProtest!
Our practical workshops are led by experienced trainers and include: - area coverage and observation skills
- human rights, police powers and the limitations on police use of force in Victoria
- assessing and monitoring police operational tactics during protests
- gathering and documenting evidence and reporting on abuses of police power
- Legal Observer safety and team protocols
Legal observing is suitable for all persons and abilities. You do not have to be a lawyer or legally trained to be a Legal Observer. This training is relevant to local police monitoring in a variety of contexts including racialised and discriminatory policing of communities, the policing of dance festivals or night clubs, policing operations targeting particular communities, and others. To become a Legal Observer for MALS you are required to attend one training session and then volunteer for two practical trainings in the field as part of the MALS Legal Observer Team roster for upcoming protest actions.
