Social movement research
Protest movements- how effective are they?
In a recent survey of 120 experts in the fields of sociology, political science, and related disciplines, disruptive protest tactics have been identified as being "quite important" to the success of a movement and were ranked as more important than media coverage.
Other findings on what makes a protest movement successful include:
• disruptive protest is an effective tactic for causes with high public awareness and support, such as climate action movements, but not for issues with high public awareness but low support, such as anti-vaccination groups
• the ability to mobilise and scale quickly in response to external events is the most critical governance and organisational factor for a social movement’s success; decentralised decision-making is the least important
• internal conflict or movement infighting and a lack of clear political objectives are the most important internal factors threatening the success of a social movement

call to action
Australia is killing climate protest. Where's the solidarity?
In this passionate defence of the activists from Disrupt Burrup Hub, climate researcher Ketan Joshi argues that Australia’s insufficient climate policy, the ever-worsening impacts of climate inaction around the world, and the increasing oppression of protesters can only be countered with a united, disruptive opposition and calls for support and solidarity from everyone.

The Whistleblower Project: Australia's first specialist legal service to protect and empower whistleblowers
| |
Launched by the Human Rights Law Centre, Australia’s first specialist whistleblower legal service, The Whistleblower Project, will protect and empower people to speak up about human rights abuses and injustice.
The Whistleblower Project provides free legal advice and representation, advocates for enhanced legal safeguards, and strives to put an end the prosecution of whistleblowers. Confidentiality is prioritised to ensure whistleblowers can speak out without fear.

In Conversation: 'The Giants' with Bob Brown
Australian activist Bob Brown, who led the world's first Green party and successfully campaigned to save Tasmania's Franklin River, is the subject of the film 'The Giants', a powerful film tribute to Bob's remarkable activism, and a love letter to Australia's ancient forests.
• Tuesday 29 August • 5:30pm • 113 Swanston St, Melbourne • $12-$22
Following the screening, Brown and filmmakers Rachael Antony and Laurence Billiet will join ABC Radio National’s Hilary Harper to discuss lessons from Brown's journey in light of today's crackdown on protests.
This event is part of Wild Hope: Conversations for a Planetary Commons, an exhibition calling for a radical shift to ‘planetary thinking’ as vital to the survival of human and non-human life on Earth.
