MALS submission to UN Human Rights Council finds Australian Government is failing to uphold civil and political rights

In a submission to Australia’s upcoming Universal Periodic Review (UPR), MALS has assessed the Australian Government’s performance regarding its responsibility to uphold and protect our civil and political rights and the right to protest.

A mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the UPR is a comprehensive peer review of UN member states’ human rights records occurring every 4 ½ years. Australia enters its fourth UPR cycle this year after its last UPR in 2021.

Our submission collates evidence of the Australian Government’s progress towards recommendations from its last UPR, and makes new recommendations to improve Australia’s civil and political rights performance focusing on three key issues that impact the right to protest:
•   anti-protest laws and police powers,
•   dangerous police weapons, and
•   legal observer rights and protections.
